A mathematical theorem proving that no ranked voting system can satisfy all reasonable fairness criteria simultaneously.
Kenneth Arrow proved that any voting system with three or more options cannot simultaneously satisfy several fairness conditions: unrestricted domain, non-dictatorship, Pareto efficiency, and independence of irrelevant alternatives.
